My great great grandfather owned slaves
When they were free’d he gave them their houses and offered them employment
He was a “good” slave owner

This is the story I grew up with (or rather heard about in my teens and continued to believe until recently)

1/
Except:
I have NEVER heard of a bad slave owner in any white person’s family history
I have NEVER heard of a good slave owner in any black person’s family history
2/
Even IF my ancestor is one of the nicer ones he still owned human beings
Allowed for a system to be perpetrated that led to other people being treated even worse then he chose to treat his slaves. Even being a “good one” allowed for all the bad ones (and they are ALL bad)
3/
155 years ago today
MY family received financial compensation (THIS was never mentioned)
My great great grandfather was made a hero in the eyes of his ancestors for giving people, who worked for him for generations, a place to live and employment (only once it was required)
4/
If the story HAD went…
He saw the evil of his present day and he chose to free and employ his slaves, years before the gov't mandated it.
If he had NOT received $$$ b/c he owned no slave at the time of emancipation
MAYBE then I could see him as a good guy, ahead of his time
5/
This great granddaughter of a slave owner wants to do what he DID NOT do

I want to get rid of ALL of my slaves, before it makes economic sense, before it is mandated by our governments

We can do this, together

Who is with me?
6/
We all (in the west) own slaves we just do not see them, do not need to think about all the financial compensation and easier lives we have because others are treated as property
https://slaveryfootprint.org/
7/
TODAY there are more slaves working, for free, in the prison system in America then at any point before emancipation
There are more slaves on our planet then at any point in history and they are bought and sold for less money; making them more expendable
8/
How do we get computers without slavery?
How do we get clothes without slavery?
How do we get cosmetics without slavery?
How do we get chocolate and coffee without slavery?

How do we live abundant beautiful lives WITHOUT SLAVERY????
9/
How do we create a world where our grand-kids DON'T need to ask if their ancestors were evil?
How do we come together and do better?

10/
I want all the slave owners (that is all of us) to find 3 friends and have a conversation in three parts
1) Currently: Where do you currently use slavery? How have you benefited? Why do you feel powerless to change it?
11/
2) Future: What beautiful future can you imagine where others are not required to work for free for you? DREAM BIG
3) Possible NOW : What could we do to move towards such a world with just 10,000 people and $100,000?
What would help YOU reduce your slavery footprint?

Let’s fund the best idea
Let's create it together
It would only take 10,000 of us each putting in $10

Let’s reduce our slaves by half within the next year and every year there after.
Lets make sure that by June 19, 2065 we can TRULY say slavery has ended and we ALL helped make it possible (so our great grandkids do not need to).
14/
R/T and have a conversation with friends submit the resulting ideas
Together we create the best option with our collective $$$
We can tackle this problem together

What a day to start
