Nietzsche on Statues

A Thread

What do these figures carved in stone matter?

What difference does it make if they are pulled down?

What does it say when they are removed?
We could begin with the obvious take that they represent a people's identity

Hero's always become Statues

These incredible people overcome so much that they imprint themselves onto the soul of the many

Time kills their body by they live forever in stone

But theres more...
They are a symbol of HEALTH

This is where Nietzsche comes in

You might know his critique of "slave morality" and "Christianity"

Well, his distaste for these stems from how they "shame" the LIFE INSTINCT in a person

The MAKE people sick via shame... but how?
Imagine your emotions and desires all stem from the Life instinct which was given to you at birth

This Life instinct is dragging your "chattering mind" kicking and screaming through reality

This is so obviously true yet so interesting...

What does this "instinct" want?
Many say "survival"

But Nietzsche noted that a pagan warrior risking his life for "eternal fame" is hardly "survival"

In fact, behaving in a way that is "safe" is widely seen as cowardly

Think of Leonidas in 300 embracing a guaranteed death versus the actions of his traitor
Life will DIE in an attempt to THRIVE

Life wants something MORE than "grovelling"

Think about it...

Your craziest fantasies want incalculable domination

You want to father a continent like Genghis Khan

You want so much freedom that NOONE can tell you what to do
How does this relate to Statues?

This DESIRE to PROJECT yourself out into the world

This is Life's CORE want

It wants to take the world around it and reshape it into its own image

You want to RESHAPE the world into YOU
This is not complex philosophy

At root, Life wants you to literally make new versions of yourself

Just scale that into a higher version:

The musician wants to take the chaos of sound and impose his personality onto it

The king wants to shape the city into how he imagines it
The SUCCESS of this Life Instinct is Health

When you can "let out your desire" and rebaptise the world in your image you are winning

But not everyone can win

For one person to win, he often needs to have his servants DENY their life instinct
Before you seduced that beautiful girl

You needed some stressed middle aged programmer to update Instagram so it was working that day

Some poor fuck in Asia had to get chemical burn creating a phone part

Some Latina had to make the bed

You victory lies on their compromise
This is the way of Life

Some people climb above everyone else and have the chance to shape the world in their image

This victory is a result of HEALTHY instincts full of Life

And so HEALTHY art expresses this in shameless images of the victorious
Nietzsche noted that this is the foundation of what we call "Beauty"

And that is how through art we choose to CELEBRATE Life

By celebrating OURSELVES
The ghostly beauty of the ancient world is built on this shameless Greek pride

We moderns struggle to imagine crafting a naked statue of ourselves out of stone without feeling embarrassed

Nevermind crafting that perfect version of ourselves we always imagine... our God
Our feelings towards Life are shameful

Life and it's success HURTS people and that is bad in our eyes

We are weary of Life

We are thus weary of ourselves

We don't want to propagate our image into the world

We are nothing but a stain on gentle Nature
Of course, this weariness is a natural sign of cultural age

But when that weariness happens, all those who were once serving you sense your weakness

They turn on you

They destroy the image you don't have the instinct to defend

And replace it with their own

Such is life
