1/7 Here’s why I think conservative comedy is so consistently terrible, and why so many awful comedians being outed as abusers relied on the same tactics in their comedy:
Many comedians (myself included) use comedy to work through trauma.

2/7 Something terrible happened, we don’t want it to just be pointless, so let’s see if it can be funny.
I still have to deal with it, but others don’t. In fact I can feel joy knowing I’m making others feel joy! That’s an amazing thing.

3/7 That empathy, that sense of “making others happy can make me happy” is so foreign to them. It’s why we must have been paid by George Soros to protest (that and anti-Semitism). Because we can’t just be doing it because we believe in helping others.
4/7 Without that desire to relate, without feeling like we’re connected, comedy is empty.
It’s why they think PC culture ruined comedy, because to them something can only be funny if you’re punching down. There’s no understanding of the pleasure in lifting others up.

5/7 It bothered me when all this information on abusers in comedy came out and the responses were, “I never thought he was funny.” Them not being funny is the LEAST important part of all this. But the more I watched the more I saw these same traits over and over.
6/7 All their jokes had elements of abuse. It was always, “How can I be big by making others small.” And that shows such a DEEP lack of any ability to relate to others, and there’s no way you can understand comedy if you can’t understand people.
7/7 I know this is extraordinarily complex and it can’t possibly be broken down to one simplistic issue. But I do think it contributes to why they SO consistently don’t get it.
And I’m grateful to those brave enough to speak out, I hope this leads to a true change in the system.

PS this was not attempting to be any sort of analysis into the mentality of abusers. It’s not my field & I’d never presume to speak about it.
It was only about my actual field (comedy) and what I see all the time there. That lack of humanity/lack of humor go hand-in-hand.
