Over the next two weeks we will see the program for government go before the 3 parties

Many of us in healthcare are watching with more than a little trepidation

I am worried

And this thread will outline some of my concerns

And some of my hopes when I voted in Feb
(2) many people are worried that @greenparty_ie will not vote through the deal

@neasa_neasa although new to the Dáil has quickly established herself as an able, committed, passionate politician

So hearing her argue that the deal is not enough, the compromise too compromising
(3) gives me pause for thought

But I very passionately hope that the PfG passes & that the greens are at the decision making table as we face into a Winter working alongside COVID, a winter where we in healthcare will surely break a million people waiting for care

Pause
(4) think for a moment, the number is so incredible but bring to mind someone you know, waiting on a hip replacement, waiting on care

Waiting

But back to the greens

Pre COVID let us recap on where we were in health
(5) the longest waiting lists in the EU

The lowest number of specialists capacity

ICU capacity less than half what our own prospectus report recommended it should be

Children being born into homelessness

Climate change rapidly becoming a health emergency

A booming economy
(6) many of us voted green becuase we knew that incrementalism on emissions was not going to cut the mustard

We need ambition, moonshots
(7) some argue that the PfG is not enough

It may not be the deal I would ideally choose BUT it is the best deal available

If the party accept it: the road ahead is hard, it will be tough, there will be battles to be fought, some win, some lost to advance the green agendas
(8) of climate action & social justice

At times the price of a seat at the table will feel personally too high

But that is the reality of shaping the future

It is messy

There are compromises

But the direction of travel is the right one

Progress is never as linear as we
(9) want

There is huge risk for the Green Party

Potential annihilation at the subsequent election as has been seen before

But that is the risk that must be taken for the opportunity to lead
(10) let us be really clear on the alternative

If the greens reject the deal

FG will go to the country & validly say we led as a caretaker government & did all we could to form a government but now we must have another election

Only this time the results will be very
(11) different

In Feb FG took a hammering over failures in health & housing

Now on the backs of the heroic efforts of the Irish people who adheres to public health measures & essential workers who to a woman (see what I did there) put our shoulders to the wheel
(12) they will romp home to be the leading party in the country & the next PfG if ye are part of it will not involve 3 senior ministries or anywhere near as much of a green footprint on policy

Climate change is a health emergency

We need sustainable investment in our public
(13) health system so that winter in our EDs is not Armageddon for our elderly patients

Never again can 40 of them sit on trolleys crowded in our EDs

@neasa_neasa we need you at the cabinet table fighting for social justice & climate action

This deal is the start
(14) so please @greenparty_ie @hazechu @EamonRyan @cathmartingreen @neasa_neasa let this be the start

Of the green voice in cabinet where you can shape the policies that can address social justice, health inequality & climate change

Sometimes better is the enemy of good enough
Excuse the typos, I am just wrecked

So many conversations this week with colleagues exhausted & so worried for the winter ahead

We don’t want claps

We want to work in a system with the capacity to meet need
