I really think it’s time to have a discussion with 1st Gen Africans (MAINLY east Africans) bc yes, we’re all black but I don’t think they truly understand what slavery did to African Americans and Afro Latinos
Recently in the past 2 to 3 years I’ve been exposed to a lot of first generation East Africans. I realize that we grew up completely differently and have different perspectives on a lot of things because we weren’t affected the EXACT* same way by racism
And actually I’m gonna come correct and just make this conversation exclusive to Horners because yeah yall look different so yeah I can’t include like the first generation of west Africans and it’s just not the same, even though some of the same things apply
I think the biggest is disconnect is that you guys don’t realize that you guys have had the privilege to indulge in your original culture, you guys hear “back home” and you think of a place in Africa we think of a place in the US.
Y’all don’t realize that you guys had that privilege to grow up eating things like in injera or Jolloff Rice. Like you guys got to grow up listening to music from your country, your parents speak to you in their native tongue your last name is African.
You guys dont have to go to the same identity crisis that African-Americans have to go through. As far as Afro Latinos, yes they do grow up speaking in a different tongue maybe, but at the end of the day the difference was a boat stop, they dont know their original place either
It irritates me that people look at horners as less black because you’re not but at the same time we can’t sit here and act like you guys aren’t seen as exotic or ambiguous or more attractive. That works in yalls favor. Even me, being part Ethiopian which is recently new to me.
It’s one of those things that I know doesn’t come from ill intent, but you just don’t understand it because you never walked in our shoes so you think because were black, that our struggles must go to the same extent. And they don’t.
There’s so many typos bc I used my mic but y’all know what I’m sayin😭 I’m not gonna go much further bc y’all get the point n it would be too long. ALSO I WISH I HAD VOICE TWEETS @jack PICK UP THE PACE
