Long thread about workforce diversity. Today I had a long conversation with someone I've only met during Covid about glass ceilings & barriers. Some reflections on what I learnt:

We can say we are committed as leaders to making things better but we cannot understand unless we really listen

But people will not tell us their stories if they don't trust us that they will be listened to. And lots do not trust.

People are tired of telling their stories, scared of the consequences
because the consequences may be even more career limiting

Aspirations are reduced when knock backs are based on discrimination and eventually many just give up. They are often weary.

Barriers are not only due to discrimination but also poor line managers & a lack of focus on development

Conversely excellent leaders who want to help people reach their potential, challenge and raise aspirations are the game changers... as are other positive role models
... which is universally the case but even more important for those who experience other barriers to development and progression.

Relatively small changes in selection processes, & HR systems would make a big difference... but in times of cuts, investment in this goes

And it is too easy for those who have never experienced these barriers to fail to see the impact of that

So we continue to miss out on all that talent which is not only a crying shame but also unacceptable.

So we are poorer organisations, as a system and as a District until we put this right.

1st we all need to listen, to create spaces and the right conditions for people to talk openly. We need to stop being defensive & dismissing things we cannot see. & we need more action.
