Lessons I've learned from Fighting Games over the years (2009-2020)

1) The cutthroat nature of FGs can bring out the worst in us. On the flip side, being able to overcome adversity by defending against an opponent's offense can bring out the best in us ^_^
2) There is no such thing as Disrespect/Spam. It's something you've made up in your head to cope with losing to predictable patterns. However, I will say that Fundamentals & Adaptation is the best way to counter an opponent abusing strong tools.
3) Imo, the 6 Fundamental Aspects of Fighting Game are:
#1- Spacing Sense
#2- Frame Data Sense
#3- Reaction Sense
#4- Situational Awareness
#5- Executional Sense
#6- Adaptational Sense
4) Always staying in practice mode & never fighting real opponents is detrimental. Mindlessly playing real matches w/o labbing matchups/reflecting on losses is equally detrimental. You need a balance of theoretical knowledge & practical experience (Mind & Soul).
5) Someone who has played FGs less longer than you can still be better than you. More time put into fighting games does not always translate to more skill. This is a difficult truth to accept & hurts. However, if you really think about it--it only hurts if you have an Ego.
6) Underestimating your opponent is dangerous. Overestimating them? dangerous. Always believing in yourself a constant amount? Godlike =)
7) Short combos that lead to good okizeme situations are usually better than long flashy combos w/ bad okizeme.
8) Grounded Footsies aren't the only type of Footsies. Marvel & DragonBall FighterZ has taught me that you can have very interesting neutral and move interactions in the Air as well.
9) Playing multiple games + characters is always good in the long run. The insight that you gain from going out of your comfort zone can always be carried back & applied to your "Main Game" + "Main Character".
10) Being annoyed by someone's playstyle is an indication of an inability to adapt on your part. Instead of brushing it off, face the discomfort head on and it could lead to new growth. Also, the clash between opposing playstyles makes for the most interesting of matches.
11) Every tool in your movelist has a use if you're creative enough. Expression in Fighting Games is important. Doing cool stuff to distinguish yourself from others is what keeps you motivated to continue playing during the most difficult times.
12) Don't be obsessed w/ what always works. High Level FGs revolves around Predicting a strong opponent, making Hard Reads to break the monotony of safe compact play. Weigh your Risk/Reward + Wheel of Options to create uncomfortable situations that break their mental stack.
13) There are multiple ways to enjoy Fighting Games. You can casually appreciate its story, characters & music. You can dive deep into the musicality & intricacies of a FGs Combo Theory. Or you can focus solely on the psychological mindgames of competitive multiplayer.
