/ This whole saga continues to read as people who are wholly unfamiliar with life in the iOS ecosystem. They start a new app, decide they don't like the 12-year-old ecosystem they entered, and throw a gigantic fit. https://twitter.com/jasonfried/status/1274024993215655939
/ (Yes, I know about 8 year old Basecamp's iOS app. But they're clearly unfamiliar with multiple longstanding platform policies.)
/ Curation has been table stakes and standard operating risk since Day 1 of the App Store. The process isn't always right, but this emotional campaign seems completely gratuitous.
/ I empathize with their problems. Basecamp has phenomenal developers and would undoubtedly produce a world class billing experience.
/ On the other hand, as an Apple customer, I also don't necessarily want to deal with that. I *like* Apple's centralized billing, interface, refund process, and many of the things listed as 'drawbacks'.
/ Consider what hoards of other, non-world class developers would build for billing experiences, given the chance.
/ Eveyone (myself included) agrees IAP + related policies have gross deficiencies responsible for many of the legitimate problems listed.
/ In my mind, the solution looks less like burning down everything IAP + policies and more like Apple coming to the table, breaking the typical wall of silence, and better addressing the needs of developers. (And isn't that always the solution in this ecosystem?)
