people joke about hockey's whiteness but the Coloured Hockey League predates the NHL and introduced the fast & furious gamestyle we see today (including invention of the slap shot)
that made them more popular than the white leagues until racism forced them to disband in the '30s https://twitter.com/NHL/status/1274000088034168834

the white leagues played a gentler version of the game. black people injected energy and creativity into it, and at their peak they drew bigger audiences than the white leagues who later adopted their innovations
then, the government wanted to destroy africville (a black nova scotian town) with their railway plan. during this legal battle, they barred them from local arenas which they were previously allowed to use after the white leagues finished playing
they were forced to use pond rinks again and at that point they simply couldn't afford to operate anymore
eventually the new NHL took the news by storm and the CHL and all it did to change hockey into the sport we watch now was buried

decades later, willie o'ree would break the NHL's racial barrier and make his debut with the boston bruins in 1958
to this day, black NHL players are subjected to the same racial abuse and taunts willie o'ree faced. history!

two things:
1) it's hard to find local rinks in marginalized communities
2) cost. hockey equipment is incredibly expensive and if you wanna join a team, you also need to consider registration and travel costs. a lot of families simply can't afford that https://twitter.com/dangledesert/status/1274057114827190272?s=20
