If you think of Apple's cut as the cost of running the App Store, then how in the world is it fair that paid indie apps are subsidizing the cost of running the App Store for free apps by megacorps such as Facebook, Google, and Twitter?
You can't compare the App Store to retail stores, because retail stores do not stock the shelves with free products.
EVERYTHING in retail stores is paid upfront.
EVERYTHING in retail stores is paid upfront.
I'll be happy to continue to give Apple 30%, just as soon as Apple removes all freeloading free apps from the store.
Why am I paying Apple a fee for the "privilege" of competing against free?
I would love to see an App Store that *only* contains paid upfront apps.
That's how it ought to be. That's a real store.

"A full 84 percent of the apps in the App Store pay nothing to Apple when you download or use the app. That’s not discrimination, as Spotify claims; it’s by design"
By design.
What kind of crazy retail store would stock 84% free products? It would go out of business in a week!

It's bad enough to have to compete against "store brands", but imagine a retail store where you had to compete against 84% free!
What manufacturer would want their products in such a store?
You probably wouldn't... if you had a choice.

The analogy between the App Store and retail stores is terrible, for many reasons. Free apps is a major reason.
Also, retail shelf space is limited, and heavily trafficked, therefore valuable. Virtual shelf space is unlimited, and App Store visitors may *never* see your app.

Both consumers and manufacturers have choice in retail. Where's the choice for iPhone owners and developers? Where are the shopping malls with dozens of different retail stores?
Apple Store is just 1 of many stores in a shopping mall. App Store is the only place for iPhone apps.

The irony is that you don't have to buy an iPhone in an Apple Store, but you can only buy iPhone software in the App Store.
Why can I buy the hardware at Best Buy, for example, but I can't buy the software? It makes no sense.
If you're going to compare the App Store to boxed software, then how about bringing back boxed software??
By the way, free apps would not be viable if they had to pay for boxes.
I'd be happy to give Apple, or anyone, 60% of my revenue if they could move a high volume of units for me.
The reality is that Apple offers *no* help to most developers. Yet the few featured devs and the many non-featured devs pay the same 30%.

Actually, that's not accurate, because free apps get featured a ton, and pay 0%. Again, I'm subsidizing them.
