learn more about juneteenth - a thread

pls read and educate yourselves <3
juneteenth is an unofficial national holiday but an official state holiday in Texas. this day (june 19th, 1865) is recognized as the day that news of the Emancipation Proclamation finally reached texan slaves (and union soldiers) after TWO YEARS of it getting signed +
the reaction from finding out this news was a range from pure shock to just absolute happiness. this of course led to celebration on the day of the 19th, hence juneteenth. this was a time of reassurance, praying, and gathering with lost/past family remembers +
the celebrations consisted of festivles, sports, fireworks, food etc. the former slaves of course knew that they would still not have property rights, education, or even employemet but the thought of simply being free was enough, let that sink in +
juneteenth was originally celebrated in just texas but after a couple years of the celebration happening the tradition spread across many other U.S states. a professor at the University Of Richmond said “Juneteenth was a critical inflection point in the black freedom struggle”
juneteenth is still celebrated across the country today. the celebrations stretch out for days (i really do recommend attending any juneteenth events near you even if you just wanna support and observe) - this is a photo from philly in 2019
pls stay educated & pls educate others. fuck trump and happy juneteenth to my black kings and queens ❤️
