Analysis of Kane's knocks in Ind, Aus, Eng, SL and SA. Do read.

Kane made 131 on debut as NZ put up 459 in response to Ind's 487, the match ended in a draw. He followed it up with 69 in the 2nd inn of the 2nd test and with McCullum put on 124 runs for the 5th wkt, again a draw.
Ind 2012, 1st test, NZ had a disastrous start being bowled out for 159 in reply to Ind's 438. In the 2nd innings, Kane (52) and McCullum (42) were dogged in their approach putting on 72 for the 2nd wicket, but the fight wasn't sustained as NZ folded for 193.
Ind 2016, 1st test, Kane began the tour with a 75 putting on 124 for the 2nd wicket with Latham, in reply to Ind's 318. But a collapse meant that NZ folded for 262 and went on to lose the test. Kane was injured for the 2nd test and upon return could manage only 8 & 27.
Aus 2011, NZ lost the 1st test. In the 2nd test, NZ and Aus were bowled out for 150 and 136 each. Ross Taylor (56) and Kane(34) put on 66 for the 4th wkt as NZ made 226. Aus were bowled out for 233 as NZ won the test by 7 runs and the series was tied 1-1.
Aus 2015, NZ lost the 1st test, Kane scoring 140 and 59. The 2nd test ended in a draw, the highlight being the marathon 265 run 3rd wkt partnership between Taylor(290) and Kane(166).
Kane managed only 57 runs in his tour of Aus 2019 from 4 innings. (ruled out for the 3rd test)
Eng 2013, 1st test, in reply to Eng's 232, NZ were 5-1, Kane (60) put on 93 and 47 for the 3rd and 4th wkt with Taylor (66) and Brownlie (23) before a batting collapse ensured that they managed only 207. NZ were out for a meagre 68 in the 2nd inn and lost the test by 170 runs.
Eng 2015, 1st test, in reply to Eng's 389, NZ were off to a rare good start, 148-1, Kane made 132 as NZ piled up 523. However Eng made a remarkable comeback making 478 in the 2nd inn. NZ in reply were 0-1, Kane resisted for 70 balls making 27 . NZ lost the test by 124 runs.
Sri Lanka 2012, 2nd test, NZ were 14-2, when Kane (135) and Taylor(142) put on 262 runs for the 3rd wkt as NZ made 412 in the 1st inn. NZ won the test by 167 runs and series was tied 1-1.

SL 2019, 2nd test, NZ were 1-1, Latham and Kane(20) steadied the ship a bit with a 33...
run partnership for the 2nd wkt and then Latham and Taylor(26) put on 50 for the 3rd wkt. Latham went on to make 154 and strung together partnerships as NZ put up 431 on the board and went on to win the test by an innings and 65 runs, thereby leveling the series 1-1.
SA 2013 was a poor tour for Kane who managed only 43 runs from 4 innings.

SA 2016, 1st test, SA 263, NZ 15-2, Kane 2*, Taylor 2*, rained out.

2nd test, walking in at 13-1 in reply to SA's 481-8, Kane fought a lone battle as NZ made 214 and lost the test by 204 runs.
With Kane at No.3, NZ's avg opening partnership, barring the 148 in Eng 2015 and 118 in India 2016, has been abysmal:
1st inn. 2nd inn
Vs Ind 20 32.5
Vs Eng 20.67 9.25
Vs Aus 22.83 29
Vs SL 24.5 19.33
Vs SA 7.25 13.33
Batting at no.3 is a tough job, especially in test cricket and particularly if the opening stand is broken quickly. In case of Kane, analysis of all the above knocks and the woeful avg opening stand would tell you that, he has to do the repair job more often than not.
For the batsmen possessing his technique and temperament, overall stats do not do justice to Kane. Against pace, Kane has ability to play the ball late and under his eye and against spin, he uses his wrist and feet beautifully.
Can he improve his record in these countries? Ofcourse he can. The challenges that he faces, is the age factor, he is 29, and also the fact that NZ do not play as many tests as the big three, Ind, Aus and Eng.
This analysis holds good not only for Kane, but for all the batsmen batting at No.3. Their job differs from seeing off the new ball and doing the repair job or building on the platform given by the openers.
Kane is a class batsman and a delight to watch when in full flow. If I were you, I would be ROOTing for him instead of wasting time in comparing and degrading him.
