if you’ve been a regular on academic twitter for more than a year, you’ll already have seen ‘debates’ about unfunded phds before. just like ‘debates’ over laptop bans, and time off over the summer
and if you’ve been using it 5 years you’ll have seen those arguments min. 5 times

so i was gonna make a joke about this but i remembered that
1. this isn’t funny: the reason we get very upset is because those issues (about which i do have my own - obv correct - opinions) really really matter

2. i saw a wise tweet this week about how people new to twitter find themselves plunged into years old debates they didn’t even know existed: they come unaware that actually people have made nemeses over these discussions, as well as - sometimes - cutting thru with good points
and if u need help getting your thoughts on this straight, let’s say a good rule of thumb is: would what i am arguing for make academia more open, more fair, and less exclusionary?
anyway i hope that everyone who’s about to have/already having a terrible day as they get sucked into this takes it easy on themselves and doesn’t let an argument on here consume them
ps don’t dunk on unfunded phd students is also a pretty good rule of thumb: the system is broke
