making everything miserable all the time in your story doesn't mean your story has more value or more to say
especially if you think you're cool and edgy for using the real life misery of marginalized people you don't experience as inspiration
if you have a minority character in your work and you're just going through a checklist of bad things you know happen to that minority in real life

stop
i strongly believe in the power of fiction to change people's perceptions and expose them to things they might not be aware of in real life but having every bad thing you can think of that could happen to a minority character isn't realism or making a point, it's torture porn
