GET TO KNOW MORE ABOUT MY COUNTRY: El Salvador 🇸🇻 (a thread)
El Salvador is located in Central America. It is the smallest country there and also one of the poorest. The population currently is 6.4m
According to the National Salvadoran Indigenous Coordination Council (CCNIS) and CONCULTURA (National Council for Art and Culture at the Ministry of Education ), approximately 600,000 or 10 per cent of Salvadorian peoples are indigenous
A commonly held notion in the capital city, San Salvador, is that there are no longer any Indians in the country; foreigners are invariably told that indigenous culture has been abandoned.
I would like to add these screenshots because it goes into depth with this documentary feel free to watch it and educate yourself more on the issue !
Now lets get into the culture! i’ll add more about the issues going on afterwards but i want to appreciate the people, food, art, and the country itself.
LETS TALK ABOUT THE WOMEN OF EL SALVADOR.
traditional folk dance !
More information about the music and fashion! The picture on the right shows the men and women of ES wearing the traditional clothing. The colors and designs can be unique!
idk about y’all but..... i’m ALWAYS in the mood for some pupusas. YOU CAN NEVER GO WRONG W A SALVI DISH
NOW LETS GET INTO MY FAV PART ABOUT MY CULTURE. THE ART.
Fernando Llort is one of the most famous artists in ES.

His distinctive style— at once childlike and modern, reflecting the daily lives of Salvadoran peasants — has adorned everything from the San Salvador’s cathedral’s to handcrafts found in village markets.
Mauricio Mejia, a painter from el salvador, talks about what inspired him to become an artist, about his magical realism, and ego.

YALL SEE THIS NATURE? ES IS BREATHTAKING. BEAUTIFUL. 10/10. AMAZING.
The Ancient Mayan Civilization has to be one of the most fascinating societies of Central America. They thrived for over 3 millennia from 2000 B.C. until the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century.
Long before the arrival of Columbus, El Salvador was part of the Mayan empire (and the less well-known Pipil civilization), along with the areas today called Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and parts of Mexico such as the Chapas and Yucatan areas.
AFRO SALVADOREĂ‘OS EXIST. STOP ERASING THEM.

i have cousins that are afro-salvi and my family used to make fun of their hair and how dark they are. teach your family about how their anti blackness is not okay.

Full video:
Salvadorians come in all different colors. We range from African, European, and Native descent. Black Salvis make up at least 0.13% of the 6.4m population. Stop pretending that indigenous and black salvis don’t exist. Stop praising the ones with the whitest skin.
Moving onto current issues:

the rival gangs MS-13 and La 18 control or influence every facet of life in El Salvador, making the small Central American nation the world’s most dangerous place outside a war zone.
El Salvador is no stranger to violence. It endured a brutal civil war in the 1980s, which lasted for more than a decade. In many ways this history has underpinned the evolution of a terrifying gang culture where extortion and murder have become the norm.
Where did these gangs originate?

Los Angeles. The city was divided into the Chinese neighborhood, the black neighborhood and then the Latinos. Salvadorians became a presence in Los Angeles in the period between 1980 and 1992, which was the Salvadorian civil war.
The violence in ES have affected the people so badly that the Salvis that moved to the US can’t go back to visit family in risk of their safety. Last time my dad visited he was held at gun point and was robbed. They drugged him and tried to kill him. I almost lost my dad in 2015.
As much as I love my country and my culture, I have no idea when it will be safe for my family to go visit. I haven’t been there since 2014 and I used to go every summer. The people there are struggling and it needs to be talked about.
Like I said earlier, El Salvador is one of the poorest countries. A few weeks ago the country was hit with a natural disaster which killed 17 people.
this is what it feels like to be a central american in the US.
To finish this thread I would like to say that I hope some of you respect us more after this and Central Americans as a whole and learned a few things. I’m proud to be Salvi each and every day and I hope to see a change in the xenophobia towards us one day.
