Colin Kaepernick not being in the NFL these last several years is not the same thing as the NFL "banning" him because of his protests.

Kaepernick regressed to an average or below-average QB, and the NFL doesn't give a lot of controversy leash to average players.
His stance made him unpopular, no doubt. And if he wouldn't have done protested, I have no doubt that he would've been a backup somewhere. But NFL franchises don't want their backup QBs to be a story. (It's why Tebow got run out, too).
If any coach/GM legitimately thought that Kaepernick's talent outweighed the controversy, he wouldn't have been sitting for three years. If they thought he could win games at a high and consistent level, he would've been on a roster.
So signing Mike Glennon to be your backup isn't so much about believing that Glennon was legitimately a better QB option, but it was about the fact that Mike Glennon wasn't going to be the story. NFL teams want to control the story as much as possible.
