My heart’s so full after listening to the brilliant insights on all things #mentoring from @jeanburgess, @evonnephd, and @sandygatt, with moderation by @pwikstrom. A few of my fav nuggets follow in the below thread:
1) Get a mentor from outside the uni because you’re always going to get institutionally interested advice from within the uni. H/t to @jeanburgess.
2) @evonnephd's MENTOR acronym:
Map (guide to how things work)
Energy (gives you it rather than drains you)
No (teaches you how to say it and when)
Talking up (spruiks you to others)
Opportunity (enables you by leading from behind or beside)
Relationship (it’s a two-way street)
3) Important for the mentor to talk about not only the good things but the “woulda, shoulda, coulda” things.
4) For both mentors and mentees, practice self-reflexivity and identify key takeaways following meetings (H/t for both to @sandygatt)
5) Enable from beside or behind rather than adopt a paternalistic or maternalistic mentoring approach ( @sandygatt/ @jeanburgess/ @evonnephd).
6) Imposter syndrome never really goes away (even for full professors) but you just learn to get on with your work. ❤️
