As someone who had organized for about ten years now, I thought I'd offer some tips and tricks for running an org smoothly, building one properly, or what have you, that may help newer organizers (thread):
Have set induction/orientation periods at certain times, not a constant influx where you need to restart or keep things at too basic a level for new members. People should be able to lend a hand when not members, but membership can't be changing daily!
Demand commitment and professionalism. Don't chase a membership forcing them to be members like Mensheviks. Your group should be exclusively people who very much want to be there
As a priority, aim for community leaders and people with good followings among the masses as a priority. We need to collectively have the ears of the streets, and their heart as well.
Never compromise your political line for opportunistic reasons like increasing the membership.
Don't allow excuses for not getting work done or readings done. Illiterate peasants who laboured under feudalism were the backbone of the Chinese revolution. What's your excuse?
Don't expand too fast. Build red power and working groups amongst those with high levels of unity first. Without unity nothing can be done, or worse, what you accomplish will be on the completely wrong path
Members need to speak up, engage with the masses, speak in meetings, and hold their own. Excusing this, allowing people to hide from the masses or conflict to turn inwards, is petty bourgeois
Find class enemies and enemies of the people to unite the masses against. Concretely- real people to go against. Sharpening class conflict must be constantly done, and we need to show the masses we can make gains and wins
Encourage and collectively build stability among the group: mental health, financial stability, emotional stability, etc. We don't want weak points, burnouts, absenteeism, etc.
Don't outrun your capacity! One campaign ran well is better than three campaigns run poorly!
Avoid turning the political personal, in the sense that this is an organization, not a friend group, not a dating pool, and not something to do "as a hobby".
Use criticism self criticism, democratic centralism, avoid gossip culture and liberalism, use two line struggle and the mass line
In this day and age, all groups need a wing, or just be entirely devoted to, militancy. Think about the right wing militias popping up all over. The number one thing of building new red power is being able to defend it. Political power grows from the barrel of a gun!
Im not saying any of this will be easy, I’m saying it’s necessary. We must build, build; and struggle for years to come. The struggle is protracted, but this is war. IF we do this right we will win and transform the world.
