Where you mentioned certified school librarians. As someone who has served in this profession since 2004 it made my heart happy. Our role is not often recognized and appreciated. I made a career change in 2001 and went to Simmons to get a degree in library science. (2)
Hoping to get a job in the Boston Public Schools. I grew up in the south end in the '60s and '70s and wanted to serve the city that I love. Only to have all the elementary certified school library and positions cut my second year into the program. (3)
I was hired half time at a BPS elem school and worked on a stipend out of the Principal's discretionary budget. I was able to do this job for 5 years while also working as a certified library teacher in another district. (4)
Income constraints required me to leave that school and work in the other district full-time. I share my story hoping that as you continue to look at budgets you'll also think about the role of certified library teachers at the elementary level.
