Young, queer elected officials deserve the right to have personal lives. Political attacks centered on attacking elected leaders for queer dating only serve to advance stigma and create homophobic shame.
Now more than ever, we have to support LGBTQ people, especially young, black and brown people in the south. These leaders are our strongest supporters and allies, and I hope aggressive police reform & defunding stays at the top of the agenda now and in the years ahead.
It's not easy being an openly queer elected official. Now is the time to support them and their historic leadership. Attempts by activists to weaponize queerness to reduce political capital are misguided and harmful, giving our opponents ammunition against us.
The election of @Saige4Raleigh was a groundbreaking moment for the City of Raleigh and the entire state. For the first time, we have bold, progressive, queer voices leading the capital city of North Carolina.
