It's hard to overstate how just lame and shoddy this editorial is @postandcourier. It's not that I disagree with it, it's that the effort to raise an argument is laughably bad. You should be embarrassed of yourselves. I can't believe professionals put this into print.
For example, this paragraph. You refer to chattel slavery as a "difficult and divisive" era. Is that really where we're still at after all this time. Can you not do better than the Lost Cause talking points that have been kicking around this state for a 100+ years?
What is the "context" you're thinking of here? Is it that Calhoun was a moral monster who helped perpetuate the greatest evil in our country's history? Is that what we get to put on the plaque?
Another terrible, stale argument. Removing Calhoun's statue from a place of honor is not the equivalent of forgetting history. There is no "better or worse." The man was dedicated to preserving a system of white supremacy. That's the whole enchilada, and what you're defending.
Holy shit. Am I reading this right, that you're arguing that Charleston should keep its monuments to white supremacy because it's been good for tourism and economic development? Is that the kind of blossoming we want for Charleston?
Seriously, who wrote this? "Controversial historical figure?" Please identify the two sides of this controversy. I would like to know which part of the paper identifies with the legacy of white supremacy.
I won't be unsubscribing because I support the journalists who do important work reporting on our local, but this is just the worst, lamest, most embarrassing editorial I have ever read. You too will be embarrassed by this eventually. At least I hope so.
I gotta think a huge part of the @postandcourier staff is just cringing to the bottom of their toes over how tired and lame this editorial is. It's arguably a worse betrayal to the mission than what the NYTimes op-ed page does to its reporters. That's a feat!
