HK leftists have existed as long as leftists anywhere. We come from a COLONY and carry forward our anti-colonial tradition. This year, with enormous stakes, we've worked in English and Chinese with knowledge and care on why HK's movement must refuse an alliance with the West
Confronting Hong Kong's colonialism literally matters to us more than anyone. It is life and death. Western anti-colonial, anti-imperialist leftists have had every opportunity to join us in this work, learn from us, even offer constructive criticism. Many have and we are grateful
What's sad and exhausting is contingents of the Western left, almost invariably with zero stakes in Hong Kong, instead of seeking solidarity, instead spend their time lobbing smears against HK leftists that frankly betray their own historical ignorance and self-centered analysis
It's doubly insulting because none of them are interested in the point we've made time and time again: that Hong Kong's postcolonial vulnerability, its lack of agency, its continued geopolitical dilemma, STEMS FROM THE WESTERN WORLD ORDER THAT WESTERN LEFTISTS NEED TO DISMANTLE
We could make a stronger case to HKers not to speed dial Marco Rubio if the Western left was interested in fighting with us for a truly anti-capitalist, postcolonial world order where a place like HK could exist in peace. Instead we get Stalinist LARPers praising state violence
The HK left is here. If you don't like me I can introduce you to others. We don't all think the same. But it shouldn't be controversial to say Western leftists must center actual HK leftists, who know the place and have the most at stake. Otherwise these attacks are in poor faith
