In today's increasingly bizarre Dublin transport news: The Gardaí charged the NTA/TII to enforce road traffic laws
A document revealed through FOI shows that the NTA/TII made payments to the Gardaí to enforce the College Green bus gate and critical junctions for the Luas.

A document revealed through FOI shows that the NTA/TII made payments to the Gardaí to enforce the College Green bus gate and critical junctions for the Luas.
In a letter sent from the NTA to the Department of Transport in April 2018, it's stated that over 500 vehicles were found to be breaching the College Green bus gate everyday during the six restricted hours in 2015 during the Luas construction.
But the Gardaí said they didn't have enough resources to police the bus gate which led to a deal where the Luas Cross City project paid for Garda overtime to police the bus gate as a non-public duty.
Non-public duties are usually policing for events like concerts, matches etc. that the Gardaí charge organisers for. This is enforcement of an existing road traffic law — part of AGS's duties. The laws are being ignored by people due to decades of poor enforcement.
'A similar arrangement' was put in place in 2018 when Luas Cross City was launched and cars kept blocking the Luas by sitting on the yellow box at locations like Eden Quay and again when taxis were banned from going south on College Green during the morning rush hour.
If @GardaTraffic can't even stop cars from illegally driving into the single biggest bottleneck in Dublin without being paid extra then what can they do? Do I have to pay to stop the cars from using the bus lane on Finglas Road?
It all raises the question, are Garda resources being used efficiently? The Gardaí have the power to enforce these laws using cameras by working with local authorities. Why are we still relying on Garda personnel to enforce them?
It clearly hasn't worked and other countries have shown that camera enforcement is way more efficient. Does AGS have to be dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century?
