It seems this government also sees itself in a way that is divorced from the political positions it takes internationally, when other multilateral diplomats take cues from those positions. https://twitter.com/PhilippeLagasse/status/1273359995107672064
Things (among others) that have been unpopular choices for Canada in many circles: until the 11/2019 vote, almost all UN positions related to Palestinian self-determination, position on Venezuela, general desire to follow US lead at all times
CARICOM took a position of non-intervention in Venezuela over the past few years.......seems like a tough place to try and get votes given Canada's choices....
On climate change, Canada did not even acknowledge publicly the complexity of the issue for the UNSC and its internal politics. Simply said it *should* be an issue, but is also in the pipeline business. This is unpopular with states actually interested in green futures.
On Palestine, there's the US position and then there is....literally everyone else. This one should explain itself.
On Saudi Arabia, the weapons thing is deeply unpopular....
And similar to Venezuela, following the US lead on Bolivia.....not popular with much of Latin America and the Caribbean.
Comparing all of these positions to the platform we put forward and....the takes about empty rhetoric, nostalgia, risk aversion, and lack of vision all hold true.
I'll also add that Canada employs some incredibly talented people who work very hard + are very smart, but they are underresourced, there are not enough of them, the government's labour relations as an employer are poor, and there is a large gap in expertise that is sorely needed
It is really hard to keep up with better resourced delegations at the best of times in multilateral diplomacy, let alone when your government doesn't give you much to work with substantially.
