Back in August, the City of San Diego selected Anaheim Arena Management and the San Diego Gulls as the new operators of the Sports Arena, taking over from AEG. That new lease was supposed to start June 1st, but it was never approved by the City Council.
In an update today, the Mayor’s office says AEG is still the operator of the Sports Arena in the Midway District, and a new, short term, lease for AEG is going before the San Diego City Council for approval over the next two months.
The new Sports Arena operating lease for AEG is separate from the RFP process the City is currently going through with four bidders looking to redevelop the 48-acre site in the Midway District that will include a new or renovated arena. This lease would bridge the gap in timing.
