I go to a lot of cons & industry events & I work my tail off trying to give advice, reviews, panels, etc. THAT is why you are invited to pro events, NOT TO HIT ON PEOPLE
Have I been hit on by artists that I could potentially hire? Of course! But I am very conscious that regardless of whether the person agreed or not, even if they swore it had nothing to do with work, there is still a power dynamic there that I have no interest in abusing
Is it hard to stay out of all the sexy fun people have at cons? Sometimes! But at the end of the day, I got more good feels from helping artists than I ever would fucking them. I suggest that more male pros try that. Mentor, guide, give advice. Ignore the ego stroking.
The ironic thing is that due to our society’s double standards there are waaaay more rumors about who I’ve supposedly slept with than many of the male pros I know who were absolutely sleeping around.
And remember, this isnt to say flirting/sex at events is wrong: it’s not! Abuse of power is the problem. And if someone below you in the industry is hitting on you, keep it friendly! Do not take advantage of that offer. It is your responsibility to avoid it, not theirs.
As for folks on equal playing fields where there is no abuse of power then have at it!
With consent, of course.
(And remember drunk people can’t give proper consent.)
