So, 14 weeks after my last gig - a whole lockdown ago - today I was able to set up the full kit and have a bash. It was wonderful to be back in my place
Drumming is unlike many musical instruments - all four limbs are working - coordinated yet independent. The whole experience is very physical. It's a fantastic way to let off steam and stress and to get the heart pumping.
Drumming is really good for you. @clem_burke - drummer with Blondie - has been involved in a major study into the health benefits of drumming: https://clemburkedrummingproject.org/
Like many instruments a lot depends on muscle memory; the aim is to get to a level where you think about what you're playing now how you're doing it. That needs to happen automatically.
After 14 weeks away from it, the muscle memory is still there. What I've lost is the speed and power....and my hands have gone a bit soft.
But it was wonderful to get back behind the kit and blow out some cobwebs.

I often record sessions like this so that I can review, learn and improve. Here's a few moments from today - playing along to the music in my head...
