THREAD: A new AP-NORC poll finds a dramatic shift in opinions on policing and race, as more Americans today than five years ago believe police brutality is a very serious problem that too often goes undisciplined and unequally targets black Americans. 1/5 http://apne.ws/h8F0FKu
Experts say the findings could be indicative of shifting perceptions among Americans following weeks of nationwide protests in response to the death of George Floyd, a black man who died in police custody after an officer pressed his knee into Floyd’s neck. (2/5)
The new AP-NORC poll finds that 48% of Americans now say police violence against the public is a “very” or “extremely” serious problem, up from 32% in July 2015. Another 31% say it is a moderately serious problem. (3/5)
The poll finds 61% of Americans think police are more likely to use deadly force against a black person than a white person. That’s up from 49% in 2015. (4/5)
Americans are also far more likely to say officers who cause injury or death are treated too leniently by the justice system, 65% today compared with 41% in 2015.
