Less than 2 weeks ago, the top cop—and top #Chad—in Riverside County, @SheriffBianco, was telling the Board of Supervisors that "it's not your job to tell me what to do" when it comes to ensuring that the @RSO is held accountable to the public for violence committed by deputies. https://twitter.com/GardenerCami/status/1273077114099494914
In May, Bianco passed himself off simultaneously as an expert on #pandemics and a constitutional scholar when instructing the Board of Supervisors to ignore guidelines from the Riverside County #publichealth officer and California Governor @GavinNewsom.
#LawEnforcement isn't Chad Bianco's only job: he doubles as the county coroner, which it turns out is problematic. Two Fridays ago, he again told the Board of Supervisors that he rejected oversight efforts— even though he knew how a man had been killed in @RSO custody in 2017.
Chad Bianco was elected in 2018, receiving an endorsement and hundreds of thousands of $ from the Riverside Sheriffs' Association, a body that advocates for officer autonomy over officer accountability and was miffed when the previous sheriff, Stan Sniff, imposed the #bodycam
That election took place 19 months after the on-camera in-custody death of #phillipgarcia at the hands of Riverside County Deputies. Stan Sniff knew about that, Chad "[deputies]'re the king of their domain in that car" Bianco knew about it, and association members would have, too
Talk about a #bluewallofsilence! Whether deputies should torture people not convicted and let them die of rhabdomyolysis didn't arise in the campaign. A constitution buff like Chad Bianco must know Amendments 5,6&8: #DueProcess, right to trial, and no cruel and unusual punishment
Endorsed by cops for his anti-accountability platform and—without qualification or credentials to comment on the coronavirus—able to overturn Riverside County public health orders, Chad Bianco must have thought he could stong-arm supervisors once again. And, briefly, he was right
Chad Bianco told Riverside supervisors that he'd consult faith figures and community members on policing—not activists, lawyers, or officials. "Politics is killing our country," he said, even though he knew that @propublica had footage of Phillip Garcia's death at deputies' hands
Chad Bianco has blatantly lied about his deputies' actions during protests against #PoliceViolence and #WhiteSupremacy in the wake of the police killing of George Floyd. He has refused repeatedly to be transparent about the condition of incarcerated people during the #pandemic.
Chad Bianco knew about the brutal, blatant in-custody killing of Phillip Garcia for 3 years—plus several other incidences of violence by Riverside County deputies in his 16 months as sheriff that have been publicized. And he is contemptuous of the people's oversight. #FireBianco
