misogyny is DEEPLY embedded in our religions, our cultures, and society. If your respect for women is conditional, as in based on her ability to be perceived as either modest or immodest - you are now choosing who is deemed worthy of your respect.
We’re conditioned to compartmentalize the women in our lives and we categorize them based on how they fit in our rhetorical concept of a ‘respectable women’. The argument “Queens vs. Hoes”. We cannot fathom respecting a woman who is promiscuous or sexually ambiguous in anyway -
she a hoe, and lacks self respect. But then we have our ‘sistas’ or ‘queens’ - these are our daughters, our potential wives. The educated, self respecting woman, masking herself from sexual scrutiny.
J cole has always emphasized this binary in his music - which explains why he’s being criticized. He’s policing a black woman on her tone, when he states not being educated on what it is she’s speaking on. Suggesting she be gentle when addressing him and others.
The point being if you’re being selective on which women are deserving of respect you DO NOT respect women periodt. And this applies to both sexes.
