Every community cancels, almost by definition. I've never opposed canceling as such: Of course we cancel Holocaust deniers, for example, or pedophilia apologists. The questions are: Who does it? To what ends? By what means? And how wide a margin of tolerance?
This is one of many difficulties conservatives face today, owing to the relatively recent mistake of putting ourselves in the position of defending, almost absolutely, procedural rights: "Let me debate!" "Let me have my say!" Instead of promoting a substantive moral vision.
It has entailed embracing or promoting, particularly on campuses, odious or obnoxious figures merely because they are odious or obnoxious. And it means that we're instantly accused of hypocrisy when we seek to police boundaries on our own side, much less the other side.
The result: When we seek to hold accountable certain figures for grievously betraying our community, we're instantly accused: "See, they cancel, too!" Of course, we do --- and always have. But again, the question is: To what end? And how? Reasonably? Or viciously?
