Orgs HAVE to be held accountable. At my 1st @archivists_org Council mtg my cohort could engage in discussion but not vote & it was a critical mtg b/c the convo was about endorsing the Protocols for Native American Archival Materials. 1/8 https://bit.ly/2zF7gx8
A stmt apologizing for how long it took to pass the Protocols was drafted @ that time & things got interesting re the phrase: “Many of the original criticisms of the Protocols were based in the language of cultural insensitivity and white supremacy.” #whitefragilityinarchives 2/8
Oh, the white fragility & pearl clutching! “We can’t call former council members white supremacists!!!” That’s NOT what it says & if that’s how you read it, then check your projection and insecurities. #whitefragilityinarchives 3/8
Seeing the freak out and true colors was horrific yet refreshing but the resulting membership support was more promising. #whitefragilityinarchives 4/8
After that mtg, the 2016 Deconstructing Whiteness pop-up (& racist hallway chatter), the Boles fiasco & how unapologetically unaware the 52 petition signers were/still are, I think the Council Stmt on Black Lives & Archives would look very different w/o its current Council. 5/8
I'm so thankful to those who can turn something like #thatdarnpetition into the #52fund, create the salary transparency working group, create the AWEF, and host bylaws reading sessions to support the profession and keep @archivists_org in check. 6/8
@archivists_org Council mtgs are open to the public & when we were able to have those in person, I was always amazed hardly any members attended. We had one person attend our May virtual mtg & I hope more of you do the same. If you can’t, plz read the mtg mins & send ??? 7/8
Org Boards, Councils, CEOs, and Executive Directors MUST be held accountable. Rotating leadership & inclusivity are necessary for change, even more so for non-profits. SO glad the last 10 yrs of SAA have been more vocal & action-oriented & looking fwd to more change. 🙌 8/8
