Some Thoughts after watching @AodhanORiordain dail speech today. As an Irish person of mixed race I’ve always dealt with varying degrees of racism. As a child & as a teenager I changed schools, as an adult I’ve been targeted too.
Every single time I felt the same mix of incredulity, fear & embarrassment It became a part of my life. Something I just accepted, I made allowances for people, “I’m different” “it’s understandable” “it’s just slagging I need to get over myself”
I realise that my experience pales in comparison to others. I acknowledge my privileges but my experience has taught me 2 things firstly the responsibility I have to interrogate my own unconscious biases as they arise because I have them we all do.
Secondly that I have a responsibility to speak out and up against discrimination of any kind. Making allowances is not acceptable anymore.
It was heartening to watch @AodhanORiordain speech this morning. I found myself nodding at several points. Hopefully we can translate this into meaningful action and change. @LabourDBN @labour link below if anyone hasn’t seen it https://twitter.com/aodhanoriordain/status/1273207958638415873
