A small rant: Now that the reality of the HyFlex model under pandemic conditions is setting in, I think we need to examine why many campuses are not even breathing the word "online" and rushing towards this model: because of the myth that online learning is inferior.
Parents think is it of lesser quality (and if they have other kids in the k-12 system, this spring did nothing to change that perception), but we, as an institution have done NOTHING to dispel that myth and actively work to reinforce it.
So rather than saying, look, the learning experience will be better and everyone will be safer, and we can and will deliver quality online courses, we're rushing to provide the worst of both world because it's nominally "face-to-face" and "in person"
Faculty are worried about their health and have no idea how to prepare. We're struggling with how to guide them. They're clinging to some normalcy with the promise of some f2f but really, it's nothing like what any of us are used to: distance, masks, shields.
Students aren't prepared for this new reality either. Campus is not going back to a less-dense normal. All of this expense, confusion, and risk, because we believe that ANYTHING is better than online learning.
