So... we have two new terribly dumb proposals about 230 this morning, and in 9 minutes there are 3 separate panels about 230/content moderation. Plus at least one other announcement in the space today. GUYS. SLOW DOWN.
I CAN ONLY WATCH 1 OF THE 3 PANELS. So I am relying on all of you to tell me what insane things are being said on the others.
Rick Lane, former top Fox lobbyist: "The question is whether or not platforms become publishers." Duuuuuuuude.
Rick Lane "there's no incentive for social media to moderate." BULLSHIT. I mean, moderation happens all the time, because if you don't, your site sucks and advertisers and users get pissed off. This is such bullshit.
Now Rick is lying about what Backpage did, and ignoring that it still DID get taken down by the DOJ, because 230 didn't protect it from federal criminal violations.
Rick Lane says he's not talking about sites that do moderate but all those sites that don't. Um... which sites exactly is that, Rick? Because I don't know any sites that don't do some moderation. He's discussing a myth.
Rick Lane: "SESTA is saving lives." Uh, no, so far all the evidence is that it's put tons of lives at risk.
Rick Lane now totally misrepresents the fact that police themselves are saying SESTA has made it harder to track down traffickers, claiming that people who make that argument want to "use children as live bait."
