In my opinion, a very hasty decision from BUCS to suspend all activity until January, and then make all leagues non competitive from January-April. I understand this decision may have happened anyway, but to make the decision nearly 4 months before competitions were due to start
seems somewhat premature to me.
For a lot of student athletes, the ultra competitive aspect of student sport is a big draw to participation and removing that, may have detrimental affects on university sport for this year.
Arguments have been made that due to COVID-19, intake at university may be lower this year, and part of the reason why leagues are no longer competitive. But to me, although in some cases this may be true, the lack of competitiveness may add to this by lowering the levels of
participation further.
In addition, it’ll be increasingly tough to motivate players to travel the country for fixtures that will now be considered as ‘friendly’!
Whilst i appreciate that we’re in very tough times and look for positives in this BUCS season (ie extra time for team bonding sessions and extra training sessions), I can’t help but feel writing off most, if not all competitive sport for students at this early stage is a mistake!
