We know Google tracks data. But what we don't like to admit is that your data = you. Everything you've done, bought, watched, every person you've talked to, every place you've gone, every THOUGHT - that's what makes you you, right? Google doesn't track 'data' - it tracks you.
Google literally knows everything. Google Maps traffic works by spying on every single person/ car on that route. Google has photos of your house and knows you live there. Google knows where you work, and how much of those 'work hours' are spent in the bathroom.
Google isn't a search engine, or a social network, or collaborative documents, or an operating system, or an analytics tool, or any of its services. But these services allow it to be everywhere, inserting itself into every single aspect of your life. YOUR life.
This is the first thing I want to amplify. Google is not its services. Google is a tracking & advertising company.
"I have nothing to hide" is bullshit. Sure, jerking off to my colleague's React Native code isn't illegal, but it's sure as hell something I'd like to hide. Everyone has secrets and times they just want to be alone - well I'm sorry to say, but you don't have those times anymore.
Your privacy is your right as a human being. It's illegal to put cameras up in your tenant's bedrooms for a reason. With Google, you no longer have these rights. Your rights matter because you never know when you might need them.
Case in point: I know someone who went to trial to try to get the person who raped her prosecuted. She lost. Know why? Because she had searched a series of books about mental illness years ago, and defence was able to claim that she wasn't mentally stable. Let that sink in.
"That's a one-off. They don't normally use your data" They have this data for a reason. They manipulate you and exploit into buying things you wouldn't normally. They use it to price fix. Ever searched your symptoms online? Boom. Now health insurance is more expensive.
You already knew this happened with flights, right? Yeah... it happens with everything. And ads. We all know about the ads. They're just what you're looking for, right? Google knows you so well.
But let's get philosophical. When you're being bombarded with ads you don't even know are ads, you can kiss goodbye to any freewill you think you have. Like... your choices aren't inspired by your family/friends, but by an internet monopoly. What a loser.
Don't forget they could also just change their privacy policy tomorrow and reveal all your data to everyone. Including that React Native colleague.
I could go on and on about what Google does with your data, how its an infringement on your rights, and how little control you have over the data. But I think I've said enough. You can always do some more research on your own (using @duckduckgo). Onto bigger things!
Google is a monopoly. And not just a search engine, a monopoly over everything. A monopoly over the internet, which let's face it, is pretty much our lives now. Monopolies remove any free choice you have over the service you use.
So what does this mean? It means you have no choice but to be tracked. Even if you think you've de-googled, they still have Google fonts on pretty much every website known to man. Because yep, they have a monopoly over fonts now. Hahaha!
Having a monopoly over the internet also means having a monopoly over the data they SHOW you. I'm talking censorship. Google has been in a lot of trouble because of this, just Duck it and you'll see what I mean (or see sources at the end of this thread.)
Everything you're seeing on the internet, which, again, let's face it is everything you're seeing full stop, has been through a censor. Not a government censor, a COMPANY censor whose sole goal is to turn a profit.
And about that: if Google and the government were ever to bash heads, you know who would win? Google. In fact, Google are winning. Google are anti-trust as fuck, which is ILLEGAL, but they're buying out governments. Because they can. Because you give them your data.
They're able to buy out governments because 1. they have money and 2. they also have government data. 60% of government employees use Google to straight up store CONFIDENTIAL GOVERNMENT INFORMATION. This should scare you.
Google has too much information. On you, on me, on the government, on health agencies. EVERYTHING. And information is directly equal to control. Google controls the world wide web. They're the largest government in the world.
But there's a silver lining! We have more and more choice every day. There are hundreds of great alternatives to Google products. Check out my exhaustive list here, and add any you know of. https://twitter.com/CatMcGee14/status/1272222323773448194
