im mainly excited cuz there arent many black queer led autonomous and independent curatorial arts platforms not just in Baltimore but globally. there are a lot next of black led digital archival/curatorial platforms especially on IG but there aren’t many doing irl programming...
as they lay is filling a much needed void in the art world and in cultural organizing...we are seeing a trend of the black arts being beaconed but this nothing new & usually the curators or organizers around these trends aren’t black...the art world is still heavily white led..
i always tell ppl that i believe visual art is one of the most powerful mediums and expressions of all time...there’s a reason it’s an elitist and white dominated society because of all the power it has...art holds our history, present and future & is a powerful ass tool (cont)
that can be used as a weapon to destroy a community’s identity or influence a mass of ppl to think a certain way. there is a reason why colonialist destroyed indigenous ppls monuments, books, and art when they came to the America’s. art holds power & reminds us where we come from
ill never forget seeing an exhibition on the erasure of black folk in renaissance art. there was actually a bunch of European renaissance art that had black folk in it especially noble figures and years later their was a trend to literally erase these ppl out of the paintings...
they didn’t want us or anyone to know that there were noble black figures in European history. y’all art & history is powerful af. so theres a reason why white supremacy barely allows black folk to shine in the contemporary art world & be curators & organizers. not a coincidence.
this is why out of any arts industry we need to take our space in the art world & do the damn thing 4 our ppl. we can make our own curatorial platforms, our own nomadic galleries or even our own small independent museums! art is a historical tool that allows us to own our story!
