THREAD - In 2007 I was driving home around 2 am from a New Year's eve party. I don't drink when I'm driving, so I was quite sober. I was a block from home when one of my fav songs came on the radio, so I drove around to finish it. Suddenly I was surrounded by 5 police cars.
I knew I wasn't speeding or drunk, so I sat and waiting. The first officer came over and asked for my license and registration, which I gave. He left for five mins. When he came back he said, "You want to fess up now, because we basically have your fucking nuts in a vice."
I asked him what he was talking about. I told him I just was driving home, letting a song play, and I was sober. He pointed over and said, "You broke into that lady's house." I was confused but protested, and gave him the number of the 2 people I'd visited that night.
He called one of them, the one I had left at 11:00 p.m. and said I obviously had enough time to commit the crime. He and three others came and yelled, threatened, and ordered me to confess. I told them I couldn't confess to something I did not do. An hour later, the LT came over.
He was calmer, and told me this would all go well for me if I just fessed up and told them that I did it. He said the lady witnessed the guy running away, and said it was an Italian looking male in a leather jacket. I told him that was 90% of the men in this neighborhood.
So he ordered me to walk across the street so she could see me walk as the suspect did. I heard her say "Oh that's him!" I sighed and asked if I could get back into my car. They let me for a while. Another cop came and said they were going to give me elimination prints.
If they matched prints taken from the scene, I would be in "Big trouble," unless I wanted to fess up. I agreed to the prints. While being printed on the hood of the sqaud car, my young neighbors drove by. As we finished up, I heard a call come in on the cops radio: "We got him."
By now it was 6:00 am. They let me go with no apology. It was a humiliating and stressful night that forever tainted my view of police officers, which is sad. Of course, I know now that #IfIWereBlack, it would have probably been much worse. Much, much worse. #BLM
