Blindspotting Awesomeness Rant Thread One.
Main Characters (Collin. Miles. Ashley. Val.)
SPOILER WARNING FOR THE WHOLE FILM
SO GO WATCH IT
Trigger Warnings for mentions of violence, guns, police brutality, racism
Yeah...it's that sort of film It's not scared to show you reality.
Collin. (Played by the LEGEND Daveed Diggs) {I don't take criticism on that btw}
I love Collin. Of all the characters in this he's the one I just wanna hug and make it all better. He's so cool and the things he goes through... the trauma he has to deal with...
Ok...context. Collin is a black man who got caught up in the probation system after he and his friend Miles beat a dude up. Collin went to prison. Miles didn't.
Anyway. A couple of days before his probation ends he witnesses a cop shoot an unarmed black man.
For most of the movie we see Collin dealing with the aftermath of this, trying to keep out of trouble and... dealing with Miles who... punches first asks questions later. But more of him in a bit.
So...why do I love Collin so much?
Well... Honestly there are so many reasons.
First up...he's genuinely interesting as a character. He's funny and complex and so human.
Y'know when you've been watching stuff with the same generic tropey characters and then bam! There's an actually interesting man on your screen? That's what happened to me with this film.
Second he conveys equal weight with his silence and his words. Everyone praises the final scene between him and the cop (Who is played by Ethan Embry even if I can't remember his name rn) and rightly so. It's a real MOMENT. (As is the confrontation between him and Miles)
But...+
+... just humour me a minute.
Because sometimes...him saying absolutely nothing...speaks VOLUMES. Because of the LOOKS Diggs gives.
You really see Collin's trauma or weight or fear. ...or love. There are some Very nice looks between him and Val going off...
Especially in the "braiding Collin's hair" scene. But that's for a different thread. Oh which brings me to...
FACEVASING! aka: Collin is actually pretty hilarious.
Seriously. Watch any interaction with Miles where they aren't yelling at each other or dealing with drama.
The BANTER. The sheer... fucking BANTER between these two. Between...Collin and practically anyone else Actually...
He's so damn funny. Which is nice. Because there's a lot of tension in this film. And the lighter moments alleviate that. (I'm gonna need a new "pacing" thread...)
Nelle's final thoughts:
Were pretty much summed up in the first few words. I love Collin. He's a fascinating brilliant character and Diggs plays him *perfectly*. Basically.
Have a picture. (I really should have put this at the beginning but I'm not writing my thread again.)
Val. Is played by the beautiful and cool Janina Gavankar
But....
And I say this with love.
Val is a DIS-loyal. Bitch.
Don't get me wrong. She's smart. Sassy. And badass as fuck. And I actually get her feelings. But...
I love Collin too much to like her.
See the thing with Val is... I totally get it. It's hard to look at people as they are NOW. Sometimes it's the people who we love most who hurt us most. Even by accident.
(Oh also ... She might have a point about Miles....)
But that doesn't mean you just...give up on someone!
Especially if they're TRYING to change! Like... dammit woman! Stop putting the guy down!!!
Seriously...the way she talks about Collin! That scathing tone she uses...
Y'know love ...I think he gets it! Especially with what he's going through in the movie he doesn't need...that
Ok. Let me give you a concrete example. (Btw. All this still counts as "it's awesome" points. Not all characters are people you like)
The hair braiding scene. Val and Collin are talking. She's fixing his hair. It's cute. They share a real moment of just being happy.
Then what does Val do? Accuse Collin of doing something he didn't do (it was actually Miles. Because of course it was).
The whole exchange is a key moment that highlights what the whole film is talking about. How people view the same thing in COMPLETELY different ways.
But the point is she leaps straight down his throat, killing his buzz and then tells him in no uncertain terms to get rid of his best friend.
And she talks to him like dirt. At least in my opinion. Other people will view it differently
Which is sorta the point of the whole thing
And you're probably wondering why I'm ranting about not liking the woman on what is supposed to be a "this stuff is great" thread.
Two words. Romantic. Chemistry.
These characters have it in BUCKET LOADS and she keeps blocking it. And I just want Collin to be HAPPY DAMMIT!
He COULD BE happy with Val. And SHE could be happy with HIM. You can see it. In that scene and others. But she refuses to accept that maybe he's actually changed. There's no moving past the past with her. He's a blindspot.
And that makes me so annoyed at her. Even if I ultimately
understand her decision. I think that's what makes Blindspotting great. I can sympathize with so many of the characters. Even if i don't like them much. Actually even if i straight up don't like them. I find something in them to connect to. To understand.
Nelle's final thoughts?
I said it at the beginning. Val is a DIS-LOYAL bitch. AND she's a smart, badass young woman who is not afraid to put these boys firmly back in line.
She can be both. And that's okay.
But seriously though ... She treats Collin bad so I don't like her.
