Coming out of closed session, the UNC Board of Trustees is discussing the building/monument moratorium set in place in 2015. Jeff Brown just provided some context on the three related resolutions passed at the time, since he is one of the few trustees remaining from that board.
The #UNC Board of Trustees is discussing whether to lift the moratorium, with members motioning to have the resolution repealed. Sounds like the members have been talking individually about this subject.
Trustee John Pryer voices some concern about making actions that are too hasty. Trustee Dave Boliek clarifies he's just moving to lift the moratorium, not to adopt a new resolution or rename anything at this time.
Now a new, substitute motion has been made, focusing more on education and curation of contextualizing UNC's campus history.
If a vote on the substitute motion is passed, the first motion of lifting the moratorium would be voided.
Some comments made in the meantime:
Trustee McCullen says if the board reacting and made action on any rumor or discontent on campus, "the prisoners would be running the prison." McCullen also stated displeasure of doing such matters over Zoom instead of in-person.
Trustee Meekins: "Our country is in turmoil. I don't care if I'm on Zoom and I'll even do it over the phone. It's easy to see we need to act now. One decision we can make easily is to end the moratorium [as a first step.]"
UNC Student Body President Reeves Mosely mentions a petition that's circulating the campus community requesting the moratorium being lifted. It's gotten nearly 9k signatures.
He said any non-action to improve this would be "singularly complicit" to the issues of systemic racism.
The secondary motion, and an amendment attached to it, have been removed. That means the motion to exclusively lift the moratorium is back on the table and up for discussion.
Trustee Duckett on supporting lifting it: "This is about leading. We need to be welcoming to others. What are we celebrating with these names? We need to be careful that what [those people] did for Carolina does not overrule what else they did [in their lives.]"
A #UNC Board of Trustees motion to lift the 2015 building/monument renaming moratorium has been passed with an 11-2 vote.
Trustees John Preyer and Allie Ray McCullen were the dissenting votes. Preyer said after the vote rushing to decisions would not be leadership but "the abdication of it."
The board is entering a 15 minute recess. Some members were aiming to go back into closed session once again, but the appropriate section allowing them to do so (aka upon what matters) was not found.
