All members of #UN General Assembly voting one by one - with #COVID19 distancing - for 5 new members of the Security Council.
7 candidates - #Canada, #Ireland, #Norway, #Djibouti, #Kenya, #India and #Mexico - only 5 available seats.
It is done on the basis on regional slates. #India and #Mexico unopposed.
But there is a race between #Djibouti and #Kenya. And between #Canada, #Ireland, and #Norway for two seats
EU will definitely lose representation. #Germany and #Belgium - on Council until the end of the year - will be replaced by two of the candidates, #Canada, #Norway and #Ireland - which is sole #EU member.
The Africa contested seat in unusual - normally the African group propose an agreed #AU candidate. #Djibouti. #Kenya
#India’s return to Council will be interesting - given current border clashes with permanent member #China - and related tension with #Pakistan over #Kashmir
The race between #Ireland #Canada and #Norway pits three of the most internationally minded countries against each other.
The new #COVID19 voting procedures mean ambassadors or country representatives vote one by one. It is a MUCH slower process. If it is close, there will further rounds - it could go on beyond today.
Elections are being conducted simulataneously for #Ecosoc and new President of #GeneralAssembly (normally decided by consensus - but some opponents of #Turkey have pushed for an actual vote)
