Every encounter with the police was magnified. They had no right to stop me, they had no right to look at me, they had no right to question me . I became angry without a valid reason of my own. 1
I also started to notice something. People were using the experiences of others to justify their own bad behaviour. Defying the law became a norm because we now had this unspoken reason to blame the police. 2
Not only was this behavior justified but it was also minimized. He was only sitting in his car and the police shouldn't have stopped him (sound familiar). He wasn't violent because he didn't throw the first punch (also familiar). 3
How do we unlearn this attitude? Change can and will happen in our system but until we reverse what we have been taught (that criminal activity is ok), it's only a temporary fix. If we really want to see change, attitudes must change from within. 4
