It's an easy out to see Shivam being harassed off of Twitter as the result of a few bad actors. That may have been the final act that pushed him, but it's also been a nonstop barrage of microaggressions from the supposedly good crowd making him feel less welcome and less worthy.
I've watched the self doubts fester over the past few weeks under that assault, and it's been heartbreaking because he is an intelligent, caring person who wants the best for Magic and Commander. He engages with the community constantly on these issues.
Criticism, especially of a public figure is fair game. But the way criticism is given differs based on factors, most obviously gender and race, characteristics that we can most readily see online. When we say "be better," we don't just mean "don't be a bigoted asshole."
Examine how you are interacting with the person you criticize. Would you say the same things in the same ways if the person were different? If you say "Yes, I don't see [characteristic]" you're lying to be defensive. Studies have shown that we have very quick, unconscious biases.
