I've had a proper sit down and ☕ to read the @risj_oxford #DigitalNewsReport2020 and here are some thoughts I have re: social media.
a possible way to improve trust in social news video if the topic is health info about corona might be to put an engaging scientific/medical expert on camera, rather than always using a reporter
if you aren't putting news out on IG/Snapchat/TikTok then er you probably should be. Snapchat not so compelling globally but IG and TikTok definitely are
impartial news is still very much high in demand so don't be fooled by all the successful internet content that is opinion-driven
if you are a journalist please please PLEASE fact check before you share info on social media platforms and if you realise you've retweeted something that turned out to be wrong, be transparent with your followers
we have done a good job of showing how much fake news is on social media but looks like we need to do a better job of showing how much of it people get through via WhatsApp and Telegram
news publishers face an existential threat if they keep expecting people to find news directly on their websites - Gen Z are too busy being trapped in wormhole platforms like IG and TikTok to care about going on your site
we possibly need to re-think social strategies for promoting podcasts, I know less about the podcast market but I'm surprised the UK is so low?
just because lots of sm platforms are increasingly being used for news content, don't assume this news is always coming from news publisher's accounts. On IG, a lot of it comes from influencers sharing news updates or their opinions on current affairs
