Another degree or a PhD isn’t always the answer. As black people, we have been taught to continue to pile up degrees and no one taught us about market research to understand what the exact industry needs are. We also usually lack pay and promotion negotiation skills. #Wednesday
Therefore, we get these degrees and still don’t get the best jobs and the best pays. Have you wondered why?

Let me be straight here, that next degree will not guarantee that promotion or high salaries on a platter of gold. So, it is important to learn to negotiate a high
entry point, understand the promotion track, and get to ask for that promotion when you have exceeded expectations and met requirements. Please keep a career journal and make sure all your milestones and achievements are well articulated and seen by not just your manager.
Sound that horn when you have done well. Track your quarterly goal and how you measure against it. Sometimes, all you need to do is change jobs! Yes, if they won’t give you that promotion, take your skills somewhere else.
Before you decide on whether you should embark on that next degree, let’s do a little thinking:

What are the new and exciting areas in your industry? Have you done that market research to understand what is required for the job you want to be promoted to do?
Is a Masters or a PhD truly needed for you to secure that seat (will it give you an added advantage)? Or you need a certification or proficiency in some skills or functional area? If you truly need a degree, do you understand what exact degree will make you competitive?
For Biomedical Engineering, a PhD was as an outright necessity. I planned for the right major focusing on 3D-printing and planned every step in that PhD to make me competitive in the industry.

Please don’t do a Masters or a PhD because it looks like the next challenge or
it will make your parents proud. Even if the degree is to get you out of Nigeria or Ghana, still make sure that this program will make you an attractive job applicant in this new country.

How’s your career and relocation goal looking?
