De-growth will probably need to happen to stave off ecological collapse, but “de-growth” as a principle around which to organize a politics feels like discourse gaming to me.

Under capitalism, growth is needed for redistribution to occur. De-growth theorists know this. So if we’re going to achieve de-growth, we’re going to have to do away with capitalism. So why not describe your politics in those terms?

It seems more honest and more respectful of the intelligence of the general public. Plus, I’m not sure that a word like “ecosocialism” is going to scare people off more than a term like de-growth
