Studying #protest in the current moment is unlike during any other time in my career. Not only are so many people mobilized to participate, but there are myriad events going on within an extremely diffuse organizational ecosystem. I spoke about it here: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/jun/10/george-floyd-protests-what-happens-next
What does that mean in practice with #JUNETEENTH2020
coming on Friday? It means that there are tons of events scheduled that will overlap in timing and location. Here's the current map for #SixNineteen from https://map.sixnineteen.com/?source=web_module

Here in the #DCArea, for example, there are currently 3 different events scheduled to take place at the same time on Friday afternoon. We saw the same thing during the weekend of 6-7 June when there were overlapping events in NYC, DC, LA and many other places.
As a result, the #protests are smaller and less consolidated in terms of who participates, what groups are coordinating, and, therefore, the messages and the tactics used can be more diverse. In other words, they are more #grassroots and organic.
Being more mobilized from below can be very good as they are more likely to represent a broader range of perspectives and voices (and are more #democratic) BUT it is harder to have a clear message when the many flowers are all blooming simultaneously.
As a scholar of #protest who surveys #protesters while they're in the streets, it's also harder to set up #datacollection in a way that is defensible: we need to collect a decent sample from these events to be able to generalize. We discuss methods here: https://advances.sciencemag.org/content/5/10/eaaw5461.full
Even though we KNOW that there are many events happening simultaneously in cities and towns, it is also very clear that the media and others will aggregate what happens around #JUNETEENTH2020
to all of these events.

ICYMI here is a summary of the #demographics of the #protests so far during this wave of contention. Data we collect on Friday during #SixNineteen will help us understand if the sustained #protest and #activism continues to follow the same patterns. https://americanresistancebook.com/2020/06/15/the-demographics-of-the-current-protests/
