I haven't told a good story in a while. This has to do with being fairly compensated. I haven't shared it on Twitter.
I was asked to speak earlier this year in person. I state fees and everyone is fine with it. The in-person event can no longer take place due to COVID19--we reschedule for a virtual event. They tell me they can't pay me what they originally stated--budgets have changed.
I'm flexible, I understand we've all had to be. Albeit you are still asking me for the same talk. Long story short. Now they can now only pay me pretty much nothing. A couple hundred dollars. I found out someone I am friendly with on social spoke there--virtually. I reach out.
I am honest with her about what they offered me, and asked her did she receive the same (she is white). She was honest and she received significantly more. I had one of two choices. Say nothing or lean into my courage.
I reach back out to them. I let them know that I have found some new information from a recent speaker who received X. And if you are asking me to speak on ----. If I am one of the leading voices on this issue, I expect to get receive what you paid her. I was tactful.
I was scared but I knew I was worth more. And not just money but principle. I told them I am setting a precedent for the next black woman you ask to speak. If I take less, what do you think they might get? And I received what I asked for. I hope this helps someone today.
