Important thread about just how discriminatory academia's international mobility requirement is: it disadvantages so many talented people, but most often (as usual), women with carer responsibilities. https://twitter.com/caffeinatedkrys/status/1273021557233856515
Sadly, I've seen privileged senior academics comment eg 'if you're not willing to move for a job, you're not serious re academia'. Unacceptable. So many reasons why ppl can't move: children, disability (their own/kids'), ageing parents, parents' illness, partners etc etc.
There are serious personal sacrifices involved when we are forced to move intercontinentally. Many PhD graduates are forced to pick up their lives and move every 2-3 years for a post-doc. And then when you do, you might get srsly penalised for it.. see next tweet
I applied for a post-doc a couple of years ago. I got top marks from 3 reviewers & almost zero on the mobility criteria for the 4th. I'd studied & worked at Sydney, Uni for 11 years. During all that time I only spent 5 mths in Canada on study leave. See the comment I got.
